There has been considerable discussion of the meaning, or lack thereof, of the apparent difference of opinion between the United States and Israel over both the desirability and the possible timing of going to war with Iran. Those Americans who still revere the Constitution and the advice of the Founding Fathers should rightly be appalled that a war is even being considered on behalf of a small client state with which the United States has no treaty obliging such intervention. War with Iran would undoubtedly follow the usual pattern, being authorized by the White House without the constitutionally mandated declaration of war by Congress and likely developing out of an evolving situation in which Israel is being given a free pass to initiate the conflict.

That the United States is in such a parlous condition is directly due to the effective work of Israel’s principal lobby in Washington, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), which has just completed its annual convention. Consider what AIPAC and its friends in Congress and the media have accomplished: Understanding that the truth about Iran would not support their case, they have completely skewed the narrative about the threat posed by that country. Iran has no nuclear weapon, has not made a decision to acquire one, and may not even have the technical ability or financial resources to do so even if its government decides to move in that direction. Yet, AIPAC has succeeded in convincing the American public that Iran is already a nuclear power and is somehow a threat to the United States, all despite the fact that Iran, far from being an aggressor, has been on the receiving end of covert operations run by Washington and Tel Aviv that have killed scores of Iranians. President Barack Obama has unhesitatingly endorsed the AIPAC line, emphasizing in his speechto that organization on March 4 that Iran is a security problem for the United States and the entire world, an elaboration straight out of Israel’s playbook that was noted approvingly by no less than Tom Friedman of The New York Times. Friedman asks “whether he [Obama] is the most pro-Israel president in history or just one of the most.”

The EU Council decision prohibits companies such as SWIFT from continuing to provide specialized financial messaging services to EU-sanctioned Iranian banks. They, alongside the SWIFT customer community have been notified of the disconnection, which will become effective on Saturday 17 March at 16.00 GMT.

Tens of thousands of demonstrators gathered in the capital on Thursday to voice their support for the government in face of persisting Western pressures against Damascus.

The Damascus rally was held two days after President Assad announced that parliamentary elections will be held in Syria on May 7, the third legislative vote in Syria since Assad took office in 2000.

The parliamentary elections will be held under a new constitution that was approved by a majority of Syrian voters in a February 26 referendum. Assad endorsed the new constitution on February 28 as part of the promised reforms in the country.

The new constitution excludes Article 8, which declared the ruling Baath Party as the “leader of the state and society,” and also establishes a multiparty system in Syria and limits the presidential term to two seven-year periods.

The May 7 parliamentary elections will also be the first such vote under the new multiparty system.

Greece is on its way to its next crisis whether it be via austerity, demonstrations or a military coup. In all likelihood Greece will be followed by Ireland, Portugal, Belgium, Spain and Italy. It will also be interesting to see if bank deposits return to Greek banks. They probably wont and there will be great difficulty affecting any kind of a recovery. The Greek people through all of this have been left out of the equation.

An Iron Dome anti-missile battery intercepted a Grad-type rocket launched toward the southern city of Be'er Sheva on Wednesday. The intercept occurred shortly after 19:00 (GMT+2).

The battery failed to intercept a second Grad on the same trajectory, which fell short and landed in an open field outside of Beer Sheva. No physical injuries were reported in the attack. It is possible that it did not attempt to intercept it, as the system can predict where a missile willl land almost instantaneously.

The 'Triple Alliance' of US/France/UK/NATO - Israel - GCC (Gulf Cooperative Council states) has been very active in creating, funding, arming, staffing, supporting and controlling the 'revolt' against the Assad government in Syria. Syria and Iran have a military alliance and neither is prepared to stand by and watch the other be destroyed. Hence, an attack on Syria either with or without UN Security Council cover, is considered a 'back door' to a war with Iran and to a General Middle East war that will include Lebanon, Palestine and Gaza.

The conservative Arab Gulf monarchies of the GCC are opposed to the radical Shiite state of Iran, however, their people are first and foremost Arabs who are Muslim and another Gaza War with thousands of Arab civilians being slaughtered by the Israelis will place the Triple Alliance in grave danger. If a General Middle East War begins over a new Israeli War on the Arabs of Gaza instead of being over a 'revolt' in Syria or an attack on Iranian nuclear facilities the entire dynamics changes. Then it is Muslims against Jews, and Arabs and Iranians against Israelis and foreigners. If the Al-Aqsa Mosque at the Temple Mound is attacked and it is claimed that the Israelis were really responsible (within the last couple of days Yusuf Ade', the head of the Iranian Quds Supreme Court, has warned of an Israeli plot to destroy the Al-Aqsa Mosque ~ link) that alone would be a Casus Belli for every Muslin to rise up and defend Islam against the Israelis. But even without this, if the General Middle East War begins over an Israeli slaughter of Arabs, the GCC monarchs will not be able to count on their senior officers keeping control of their air forces, of their armies, and of their naval forces. That would really blow up the Middle East!

Netanyahu cancels European trip, citing volatile situation in Israel's south ~ link ~ Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu cancelled his planned visit to Paris and Madrid, which was on Wednesday, due to the “security situation in southern Israel,” despite the renewed calm in the Gaza Strip.

Attempts at coordinating the visits to France and Spain began after Netanyahu's return to Israel from the AIPAC conference in Washington. Israeli embassies in Paris and Madrid were asked to inquire whether the Élysée Palace and Spain’s prime minister’s office would allow Netanyahu to visit on March 21 and 22.

The explanation given by the Prime Minister’s office is a bit strange, especially in light of the fact that it was released after a renewed ceasefire was announced in the Gaza Strip. Thus, the cancellation brings up the question of whether the Prime Minister’s Office expects another round of fighting in the coming days. The Prime Minister’s Office refused to comment or offer a response over the cancellation.

There are very few subjects that get people more fired up than the subject of sexuality. In fact, almost all of the highly contentious "social issues" that have America so deeply divided today have something to do with sexuality. Many Americans are pretty clueless when it comes to the economy, but when it comes to abortion, sex education, gay marriage, teen pregnancy or sexually transmitted diseases almost everyone has a very strong opinion. If you try to convince someone that they are wrong about any of these issues, most of the time you will be fighting a losing battle. Most Americans simply do not want to be told what to do when it comes to sexuality. But attitudes toward sexuality have definitely changed in America over the decades. In the early part of the 20th century most Americans followed strict rules when it came to sexuality, but then along came the "sexual revolution" and all of that changed. Today, most Americans consider the loose sexuality in our society to be a very good thing. Most Americans are glad that they can have sex with any other willing adult partner (or partners) any time they want to. But has this been good for America? Is it better to have a society with loose sexuality or a society with strict rules for sexuality?

While much of the rest of the world would consider us to be a bit "prude", the truth is that America is a global leader when it comes to loose sexuality. We produce more pornography than the rest of the world combined and we have the highest teen pregnancy rate on the planet by far. Our movies endlessly promote loose sexuality, our television shows endlessly promote loose sexuality and our music endlessly promotes loose sexuality. We are the number one exporter of entertainment in the world, and our values regarding sexuality are influencing minds in every corner of the globe every single hour of every single day.

In our public schools, the mechanics of human sexual behavior are taught to students as young as five years old. Most of the time this is done without any sort of moral commentary whatsoever. Usually, the only thing our children are taught about sexual responsibility is to "use a condom" - as if that is going to solve much of anything.

So has all of this loose sexuality made America a better place?

Have there been any negative consequences for the choices that we have made?

All over America, there are millions of Americans that are quietly preparing for doomsday. They are turning spare rooms into long-term food storage pantries, they are planting survival gardens, they are converting their homes over to alternative sources of energy, they are taking self-defense courses and they are stocking up on just about anything you can imagine. They are called "preppers", and their numbers have absolutely exploded in recent years. In fact, you might be living next door to one and never even realize it. According to a recent Daily Mail article, there are approximately 3 million preppers in the United States today. Others believe that the true number is significantly higher than that. This movement has become so popular that there are now even television shows being done about preppers. The most popular is probably "Doomsday Preppers" on the National Geographic Channel. This movement is still growing and is not going to go away any time soon. In fact, as the world continues to become even more unstable it is likely that a lot more Americans will find themselves becoming preppers in the years ahead.

So what exactly are all these people so concerned about? Exactly why are there millions of Americans that are feverishly preparing for doomsday?

Running on a third party ticket would give Paul access to the votes of his natural constituency: the young independents disgusted with both parties who yearn for real change – i.e. a revolution – in Washington. It would give the Old Right remnant in the GOP, which Paul has reawakened from its long sleep, a place to go in November, while also making room for independents, antiwar voters, civil libertarians, disillusioned Obamaites, and other constituencies unlikely to be caught dead voting in a Republican primary.

Polls indicate Paul would get anywhere from 18 percent to 21 percent running as a third party candidate, and the percentage seem to be climbing as the actual election draws nearer. These same polls indicate he would draw two-thirds of his votes from the Republican column, but I don’t think these “drill-down” analyses hold much water: what they leave out is non-voters, new voters, and – most important of all – future events. If the US starts bombing Iran before election day, or, say, we have another economic meltdown, as we did in the winter of 2008, then all bets are off – and the prospect of a Paul victory becomes more than mere wishful thinking.

A Paul third party candidacy would not only open up a prospect that, right now, seems highly unlikely if not impossible – i.e. Ron Paul sitting in the Oval Office – it would also place significant constraints on the other candidates, including President Obama. Faced only with a warmongering Republican, Obama can pretty much do whatever he likes when it comes to provoking, sanctioning, and threatening Iran: after all, antiwar voters have nowhere else to go. With Paul in the race, however, Obama is going to have to be very careful not to lose his left-ish antiwar constituency, which has so far stuck with him as the lesser to the two evils. If and when Obama makes his move against Iran, Paul’s third party campaign will be right there, scarfing up votes from the President’s disillusioned and angry former supporters.

Indeed, the ultimate effect of a Paulian third party ticket could well be preventing the outbreak of a major war in the Middle East. This, it seems to me, is a factor the Paul campaign is going to have to weigh in the balance as it considers its options. In terms of the Paulians’ own principles – especially their characteristic opposition to wars of aggression on moral grounds – this is a powerful argument for launching a third party campaign.
